You have come to the right place. There are 5 different ways to become a resident of Costa Rica. Here I will discuss the most common.
You can obtain a temporary residency permit valid for two years by investing $150,000 in property, stocks, or an existing or new business. before the expiry of your first temporary residency you can then apply to extend for another 3 years. Then before that expires you can apply for permanent residency. The entire process to go from temporary to permanent residency takes about 5 years. You do not need to be a resident of Costa Rica to own real estate here. In general, foreign owners of real estate in Costa Rica have the same property rights as local Costa Ricans.
What are the benefits of having residency in Costa Rica?
A: As a resident, you'll have a DIMEX ID card and Caja (health care card), which will allow you to complete every process a citizen can (except vote). You won't have to carry your passport around. When you board a plane to Costa Rica, you'll no longer have to show proof of onward travel. Upon arrival at the airport you go to the short line, show your Costa Rica ID and head through security.
